Why
I'm Voting Green by
Rachel Lagodka
Why I agree with Carole Ford but am Still
voting for Malachy McCourt and Howie Hawkins
First off I have to say that while I am a
member of the New Paltz Green Party I am in no way an officer and do not speak
for anyone but myself. I am “moderate radical robin hood liberal.” I am not at
all ashamed of the word “liberal” it means “free” and I am all about freedom.
The dream of freedom that gave birth to the revolution that spawned this
country. Freedom is about the health and happiness to enjoy life.
I agree with Carole Ford except when it comes
to my vote.
I do see the difference between the Democrats
and the Republicans when there is one and usually, but not always, that
difference is that the Democrat will defend more of my freedoms and protect more
of the environment. I would never do something that I sincerely thought
would get a worse person elected to office even if it meant having to vote for a Democrat rather than a Green.
Fortunately I don’t have to live in a place where I am in the unconsionable
situation where if I vote for the one I like better I will get stuck with the
one I like less. I live in New York where
the gubernatorial race will, by all accounts, even the NY Post, result in a
double digit victory for Spitzer.

The Greens will not appreciably affect the
outcome of the gubernatorial campaign. Now how should Malachy McCourt react to
this information?
Why, he should make some sort of joke so his
supporters can at least get a good laugh while they go out petitioning in the
100 degree heat and then have to go begging for
a mere 50,000 votes so they can get their ballot status. I can safely say that
most Green know we have an icecube's chance in hell of winning the gubernatorial
race in November. We just want 50,000 votes so we to be on
the voter reg form like the other parties, (and I at least want it for the Libertarians
too though I don't have the resources to help them too). David and Goliath? Yeah
except we don’t have enough rocks in our sling-shot so all we can do is dance
around.
The senatorial race will go Hillary Clinton, a
pro-war Bush policy supporter in spite of the fact that most Democrats in New
York are against the war. Tasini has as good of a chance as winning the primary
as McCourt does of winning the gubernatorial. What kind of faith should you have in a party like
that? Why should any true progressive vote for Hillary when all the sheep will
anyhow? A protest vote? Damn straight, and damn straight there should be.
When Tasini loses the Greens will still be there with a peace candidate for
senate, Howie Hawkins. How
stupid or cruel do you have to be to support the war? I’m appalled and dismayed
that so many of us will allow any politician who supports the war in Iraq to
remain in office. The Democrats have more voters. Some of them are blindly loyal
to their party affiliation even though the party continually betrays their
ideals.
Some Greens have been critical of Hinchey, but
having lived in New Paltz for 9 years I can safely say that most Greens just
love Maurice. If anything, Greens have had a positive effect on Hinchey by
urging him to discuss the Patriot Act. New Paltz Nation is run by three Greens
and look at how we feature him!
Many, but not all Greens I know support Susan
Zimet against Bonacic, and we aren't running anyone against her this time believe me.
We’ll all be really lucky if we find someone good who will agree to run for town board. Let’s all work together
to find the best candidate regardless of party affiliation.
